Our History - My Story
Kia Ora Whānau,
I have manifested Indigenous Blades into reality, and I am most grateful that I can finally share my vision with you.
Here is how Indigenous Blades came to life:
Born and raised in the humble valley of Utakura, Te Tai Tokerau was a boy who spent his early days learning, growing, and exploring the land and waters of Hokianga. He was fortunate to gain valuable life lessons from loved ones that now live on in his memory. To this day, their teachings have helped guide him through life.
Leaving home at the age of 14 was a tough journey that led this young country boy to the meat industry. From floor boy to manager, he thrived in school, apprenticeships, large food chains, and supermarkets in the busy, fast-moving parts of Aotearoa.
20 years later, he returned home as an experienced, qualified butcher and spent 8 years in a small butcher shop in Okaihau providing for his whānau. He was brave enough to make the courageous move across the ditch to NZ's neighboring country, Ahitereiria. He jumped on the plane with his wife, daughter, and knives; they landed in Melbourne, Australia.
Another 10 years later, this wise country man supplied an abundance of meat and knowledge to many whānau within Victoria.
With close to 40 years in the meat industry up his sleeve, there is one thing he is certain of: who he is, where he is from, and what a seriously sharp knife of quality is.
That Utakura valley boy is me, loud and proud - always and forever!
Hundreds and thousands of hours and research has gone into searching for the perfect blade. I have finally found the blade that matched my standards; high-quality stainless steel that is silver-etched to prevent drag and hold a longer-lasting effect. These knives are designed not only to be a showpiece but they are tailored to be working knives. This will allow you to put food on your table from the paddock to the plate with pride and charisma.
I am honoured to have worked with one of Aotearoa's hottest Tā moko designers - MJC Tā Moko & Designs. MJC’s talented hands have been able to bring to surface the rich history of Maraeroa; my place of home, the name which my daughter carries and now, these blades.
Each blade of our first edition set proudly shows off their own intricate artistic flavour. I will only produce 1000 sets of these knives which will make them one of a kind.
I am so blessed to be able to share with you these 3x Knives and Display Case included in our Māori Knife Set.
I opted to run a Facebook-wide competition for our followers to select the name for our initial product launch. The winner, determined by the people, resulted in 'The Koi', a meticulously designed knife with a black handle, blade, and striking Māori patterns.
This knife is definitely one of my favourites!
Moving into our Tangaroa range of knives. Our Tangaroa Knives was established incorporating elegant paua handles. An 8 inch and Kiwa fillet knife were produced for expertly filleting fish. This utensil is a beneficial asset to your fishing equipment for outings on the water.
Stunning to gaze upon and flawless to use!
Crafted with precision and expertise, our Tangaroa Collection features exquisite fillet knives designed for your culinary needs. Additionally, our line includes the Tangaroa Pocket Knife for your oceanic adventures and a sleek Sharpening Rod for maintaining a razor-sharp edge.
This Tangaroa Collection is an absolute crowd pleaser!
The man behind the art and designs of our latest creations is an OG in the world of Tā Moko — the brother M.S, a true artist and storyteller. He’s the one who revealed my maunga, which I proudly carry on my back — a story deeply cherished and shared only with those closest to me.
My beautiful Aunty Harata’s son-in-law has now teamed up with Indigenous Blades to bring the beauty of Maraeroa to life through the intricate design of our blades.
